Daniel Stabrawa joined the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1983 and was appointed 1st concertmaster three years later. Including Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle is the third of the orchestra’s chief conductors he has worked with. Stabrawa, who also performs as a chamber musician and increasingly as a conductor over the last few years, has often appeared with great success as a soloist in his orchestra’s concerts. In February 2016, for example, he played Karol Szymanowski’s Second Violin Concerto, which had never been performed in Berliner Philharmoniker concerts before. With his colleague, the timpanist Rainer Seegers, Stabrawa talks about making music together for more than 30 years, his memories of Karajan and the challenge as an artist of always doing one’s best.
