There can hardly be another instrument that has a technique as complicated or as difficult to learn as the harp. This is especially due to the seven pedals which are used to alter the pitch of each of the strings one semitone higher or lower. The harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, who has been a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1993, is one of the best in her field. In May 2016, she appeared as the soloist in Alberto Ginastera’s Harp Concerto under the direction of Juanjo Mena, accompanied by ʻherʼ orchestra. Here, before giving a brief introduction to the art of harp playing and explaining the background to Ginastera’s concerto, Langlamet plays a short piece from the composer’s Danzas Argentinas.
